TADCASTER Albion’s new star signing Jonathan Greening offered his playing services to York City after being released by Nottingham Forest at the end of last season.

Greening, 35, contacted Nigel Worthington to alert the Minstermen chief of his availability.

But Worthington politely turned down the chance to sign the midfielder, who began his career at Bootham Crescent and was later a substitute for Manchester United when they beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the 1999 Champions League final.

Instead, Greening is in Tadcaster’s squad for this afternoon’s home match with Maltby Main.

“I wanted to come back to York and texted Nigel Worthington in the summer to say I was a free agent,” the former England Under-21 international revealed.

“It would have been nice to come back to where it all started, but he sent me a nice text back saying he was looking for younger players and wanted to go down that road, so I said that was fine with me and that I hoped the club would get promoted.”
