Rough start for Hemingbrough

8:38am Thursday 1st May 2008

HPH York Vale Cricket League division one title holders Hemingbrough suffered a shock opening day defeat at home to Askham Bryan YPO.

Hemingbrough slumped to an unfamiliar 62 all out with Pete Wood (3-9) and Mark Grewer (3-14) inflicting the damage, aided by a fine fielding performance, including four catches by wicket-keeper Nick Janulewicz.

A quick-fire 29 by young all-rounder David Knight meant the result was never in doubt as the visitors cruised to a six-wicket victory.

North Duffield's Lee Wild put on a one-man show against Bishopthorpe.

Wild opened the batting and top-scored with 55, including eight fours, while Dave Bielby contributed 54 as North Duffield notched 170-6. Wild then led the bowling attack to grab 4-25 in 15 overs as the Bishops were restricted to 139-9, Colin Markham hitting 34.

There was a run-feast at Clifton Park where York amassed 240-7 largely thanks to Cameron Sippel (82) and Tom Copeland (77no).

Wheldrake took to the challenge with spirited knocks from Andy Carter (64), Matt Mellor (43) and Chris Walker (42), but fell 17 runs short.

Spearheaded by two 16-year-olds - Adam Prescott and Alex Webster - the Burn bowling attack limited British Sugar to 129-7. Webster then put on 72 runs with his father, Mark, to steer Burn to victory by five wickets.

Gary Moore (66) and Steve Smith (44) were in dominant form as Drax secured a six-wicket win against newly-promoted Barmby Moor.

Two sets of brothers dominated in a tight game between Westow and University of York Staff in division two.

Westow's Neil Earle (89) and Mark Earle (32) contributed to an impressive 206-4. But Affaq and Ishaq Amed replied with 92 and 29no respectively to grab the points for Uni in the 37th over.

Copmanthorpe II enjoyed their division four debut with a 35-run win at Selby, Matt Oakes (57) and Neil Brook (33no) providing a solid foundation for the visitors' 168-7.

In response, Jeff Knight and Steve Whitehead both hit 33, but Cop's John Traves (4-28) had the last word as Selby were shot out for 133.

Guy Mowbray returned 5-39 for Bishopthorpe II at Burton Salmon, who scraped home by 16 runs thanks to a cavalier 85 from opener Steve Warner.

In division five, two youngsters plotted Selby II's nine-wicket demise at Pocklington.

Jed Vale, aged 14, hit an unbeaten maiden century as he and 16-year-old Elliot Newby (45no) put on a 164-run partnership in only 24 overs to overhaul Selby's 162-7.

Performance of the week 14-year-old Jed Vale, who hit a stunning 104 not out for Pocklington in division five against Selby II.
