York Vale division one's Hemingbrough made to wait for title after late wobble

WOBBLING Hemingbrough’s second successive defeat has left the HPH York Vale Cricket League division one title champagne on ice.

After last week’s shock defeat by bottom club Heworth, ’Brough went down by 21 runs at home to relegation-threatened Clifton Alliance on Saturday.

Hemingbrough let slip two strong positions against Alliance, who were 52-6 at one stage before being lifted to 159-8 at tea by Ali Lloyd’s unbeaten 79. That target looked within ’Brough’s grasp at 135-6, but Matt Clark (77) lacked support and they slid to 140 all out.

Hemingbrough hold a 24-point lead over North Cave, who beat Heworth by eight wickets. Despite a 124-run second-wicket partnership between Ravenhall (78) and Matt Huffer (48), Heworth paid dearly for dropping opener Craig Hewson (65) before he scored as he put on 144 with Charlie Cockin (74).

Ian Holmes’ career-best 7-39 was wasted by Bishopthorpe’s batsmen who failed to challenge Barmby Moor’s 149-9 as a great spell by Tony Smith (4-20) left them on 10-4, eventually being all out for 116.

Salman Syed hit 92 at almost a run-a-ball in University of York Staff’s 209-7 which was eclipsed by a match-winning opening stand of 157 from Burn duo Leigh Adamson (79) and Ray Adamson (58).

Wheldrake edged out Copmanthorpe, veteran Les Fearn’s 4-27 proving decisive.

Jamie Agnew hit 80 and took 3-4 as division two leaders Ben Johnson overcame Westow by 54 runs.

Second-placed Stockton & Hopgrove routed Kelfield for 47, Dan Fairclough taking 6-24.

Despite John Patrick’s 71 from 68 balls, North Duffield succumbed to Fulfordgate.

Hirst Courtney run-machine Brian Howard was out for a duck against Bishopthorpe II, but the division three leaders compiled 200 thanks to Nigel Emery’s 103. Howard then made up for his rare batting failure by taking 5-13 as Bish were beaten by 85 runs.

Woodhouse Grange boosted their promotion hopes by defeating Acomb, Paul Townsley (37) top-scoring for Grange.

Heworth II collapsed to 79 all out against Ovington II in spectacular fashion in division four, losing their last six wickets for seven runs as Chris Tune took 4-25.

Champions Malton & Old Malton went beyond the 400-point mark as Tom Hodgson (4-10) and Jim Dawson (4-20) starred in the win against Huntington.

Sixteen wickets fell in a match spanning only 30 overs at New Lane where Shaun Littlewood took 5-20 as York RI bowled Wheldrake II out for only 34, the last five wickets falling without the addition of any runs.

Askham Bryan recovered from 20-4 to set a winning total against Copmanthorpe II thanks to a fifth-wicket stand of 71 between Mike Bains and Steve Gardner.

Burn II made sure of division five promotion as Mark Webster (94) provided the platform for a match-winning 225-5 against Thorp Arch & Boston Spa.

Mark Steward scored 83 in Selby II’s 146-9 against Stockton & Hopgrove II who fought back from 44-5 to claim victory.

Deepak Selvaraj’s 118 set York on their way to victory against Malton & Old Malton, whose Will Clayton responded with a brave 103.
