Syed Taha’s third five-wicket haul of the season enabled Wheldrake II to lift the Premier Sports Cup.
His 5-36 put the skids under Heworth II at Bishopthorpe and helped his side win a York Vale Cricket League final at their fourth attempt.
Wheldrake totalled 167-9 thanks to John Cockerill (74) and Evan Davies (30), while Tom Neal was Heworth’s most successful bowler with 6-46.
The men from Elmpark Way set off like a train in reply, with openers Pete Fairburn (48) and Pervez Akhtar (19) putting 73 on the board in 15 overs. But once the partnership was broken by slow bowler Taha, who took his tally in this competition to 13 wickets, Heworth’s reply spluttered and they were bowled out for 128 in 35.2 overs.
The Guy Mitchell Cup was won by Ben Johnson who defeated Kelfield by 61 runs at Hemingbrough.
The match got off to an explosive start from the opening over with BJ opener Steve Wragg hitting the second ball from James Still for a six, the third for a four and was caught off the fourth delivery. The York side went on to make 210-7 with major contributions from Neil Drew (48no), Bhuddi Mirando (37) and Danny Cameron (32). Matty Walker was Kelfield’s most successful bowler with 3-27.
Although second-wicket pair Walker (47) and Andy Charlton (46) took Kelfield to 102, the absence of skipper Neil Atkinson and vice-captain Phil Smith severely weakened the villagers.
The Mirando brothers Bhuddi (4-23) and Dinesh (3-31) bowled Ben Johnson to an easy win.
