RELEGATED Heworth stunned red-hot HPH York Vale Cricket League title favourites Hemingbrough with a crushing eight-wicket victory.
Remarkably it was the Elmpark Way men’s first win in 15 attempts in division one and came after an under-strength Hemingbrough side won the toss and elected to bat on a damp wicket. They paid a dear price, shot out for just 80 with Aaron Solanki (4-26) and Prasajeet Chakrabarti (3-8) creating havoc.
Unfortunately for second-placed North Cave they could not take advantage as their game at Bishopthorpe was washed out.
Copmanthorpe were rolled over for just 59 by Barmby Moor whose Adrian Stancer seized 4-17 then hit an unbeaten 33 to speed his side to victory in 10.3 overs.
Burn piled up a winning 258-5 against Clifton Alliance thanks to Leigh Adamson (96) and Rob Webster (82 not out).
Half-centuries by Salman Syed (68no) and Mudassar Sadiq (51) earned University of York Staff victory against Wheldrake.
It was a red-letter day for North Duffield in division two as they won their first game for nearly two years.
Relegated last season without a win, it has taken then 17 games to notch victory this summer – a scenario that seemed highly unlikely at tea after being bowled out for just 62 by Melbourne on a pudding of a wicket. But bowlers Trevor Britain (6-21) and Steve Hardy (4-19) rose to the occasion to skittle out the home side for 42.
On a day when the ball generally dominated the bat, Phil Smith’s 102 for Kelfield against Askham Bryan shone like a beacon.
He resisted three excellent spells by Pete Wood (5-14) to notch his second successive ton before Askham were bowled out for just 60 by Matthew Walker (5-22) and Martyn Rhodes (5-34).
Ovington overcame ten-man Westow by four wickets thanks to Paul Mizon’s 6-34 which saw the Ryedale team crash from 102-1 to 124 all out.
Stockton & Hopgrove fought back to defeat Fulfordgate who looked set to overhaul the visitors’ 140-9 when they reached 92-5.
But the return of Dan Fairclough (4-19) and Matt Bradshaw (4-26) saw the last five wickets fall for 17 runs.
Division three leaders Hirst Courtney wrapped up an easy home win against Acomb who were bowled out for 100 with Emery taking 5-46.
Ashley Cattle made the most of being dropped in the second over to score 91 in Woodhouse Grange’s win against Welton & Brough.
Stillingfleet’s Rob Bielby included a triple wicket maiden in his career-best 6-18 in the rout of Bishopthorpe II.
Malton & Old Malton swept to the division four title in champion style, beating Ovington II by ten wickets after the York side were bowled out for 69.
Stu Ross produced an astonishing analysis of 10.3-5-6 as Huntington beat Burton Salmon.
In only his second appearance for Copmanthorpe II, Phil Jackson was the match-winner against Pocklington with 5-22 and 62 not out.
Kalum Perera took 5-32 as Stockton & Hopgrove II held off Thorp Arch & Boston Spa by 27 runs to leapfrog York – beaten by Burn II – into second place in division five.
All-rounder Phil Jackson’s unbeaten 62 and 5-22 for Copmanthorpe II against Pocklington.
