Ian Holmes century helps Bishopthorpe to York Vale Cricket League win over Heworth

Bishopthorpe captain Ian Holmes scored his maiden HPH York Vale League century in the division one victory against Heworth.

Batting at number three, he hit an undefeated 112, putting on an unbroken partnership of 148 with Scott Reeves (40 not out) as the Bishops posted 183-2. Reeves then took 3-27 to back up a great opening burst by 16-year-old Charlie Featherstone as Heworth were bowled out for 103.

Nic Hindle cracked a masterly unbeaten 150 as Clifton Alliance swept aside Wheldrake by 96 runs.

It was the first time a Clifton player had scored a Vale League century as they racked up 248-2 with Ali Barton chipping in with 39 not out. Dave Friend grabbed 4-23 as Wheldrake struggled to 152-8, Chris Walker making 69.

York University Staff edged a low-scoring affair against Copmanthorpe by two wickets with a couple of overs remaining.

Rich Waites took 4-24 as Cop laboured to 119-9 and Staff did not find batting much easier, particularly when Mike Walker snatched 4-21, including three wickets in his first over.

Hemingbrough routed one of their title rivals, Burn, by six wickets. Wicketkeeper Matty Clark took three catches before shedding the gloves to take 4-27.

Askham Bryan found division two high-fliers Stockton & Hopgrove too hot to handle, Rich Grimes taking 5-25 in a seven-wicket win.

Ovington switched their game from Knavesmire to North Duffield because of York Races but the loss of home advantage did not stop them storming to a 181-run victory.

Their massive 248-7 was led by Al Metcalfe’s aggressive 87 and Craig Nichols’ unbeaten 83 before team-mate Graham Haigh took 6-23 from 11 overs.

Westow also enjoyed a run spree. In-form opener Andy Welford made a match-winning 109 in their 238-9, which featured 5-21 by Selby’s Steve Whitehead.

Ben Charlton’s 4-43 and veteran Malcolm Harrison’s solid 57 were the highlights of Melbourne’s win against Fulfordgate.

Bhuddi Mirando’s 5-28 earned Ben Johnson an easy win against Kelfield.

Hirst Courtney stroke-maker Brian Howard’s stylish 114 eclipsed Welton & Brough in division three.

Bishopthorpe II came unstuck against Acomb slow left-armer Steve Rawle (6-19), whose efforts were backed up by John Webster’s unbeaten 52.

York RI’s batsmen hit Heworth II to all parts of the ground in posting a gargantuan 328-2 from their 40 overs. Phil Holland (112 not out off 70 balls) and Will Outhart (93 not out) put on an unbeaten 160 in a 226-run division four win.

Ovington II’s Bobby Clapham followed his score of 42 to wrap up victory against Huntington with an all-bowled hat-trick to finish with 4-9.

In-form all-rounder Paul Thornton hit 77 not out as Askham Bryan saw off Pocklington by five wickets – just three weeks after his 84 knocked the same opposition out of the cup.

Division five leaders Burn II were pushed hard by Stockton & Hopgrove II before emerging 20-run victors. Darren Miller’s 4-40 proved decisive.

Mick Bell took 5-37 for Selby II, including the wicket of Thorp Arch & Boston Spa opener John Orrell, whose dominant 72 earned a solid win.

Performance of the week

On a day of big individual scores, Nic Hindle (Clifton Alliance) topped the lot with an unbeaten 150 against Wheldrake in division one.
