Woodhouse Grange edge out Goole in fight for HPH York Vale Cricket League division four title

WOODHOUSE Grange pipped Goole Town for the HPH York Vale Cricket League division four title by one point.

It was the final promotion issue to be resolved on the last day of the season with the third contender, Bishopthorpe II, missing out despite a crushing win against Pocklington.

Grange made no mistake in their game against relegated Thorp Arch & Boston Spa. Teenagers Dan Wilson (61) and Ashley Cattle (28) put on 102 for Grange’s first wicket, with Colin Smith (44no) pushing them on to 198-6 at the close. TABS were then rolled over for just 64.

Goole’s victory at Copmanthorpe II was equally emphatic, Steve Cawthorne taking 6-12 and Chris Sugden hitting 74 in a 153-run mauling.

With both the top two winning, Bishopthorpe II’s crushing of Pock proved immaterial. Guy Mowbray took 4-14 as Pock were bundled out for just 36.

Heworth’s 136-6 against Welton & Brough proved below par as Matty Glew raced to 83 not out in an eight-wicket win.

Bishopthorpe’s first team had the satisfaction of defeating new division one champions University of York Staff, Scott Reeves taking 4-41 in a 35-run victory.

Runners-up Clifton Alliance were made to work hard for their 30-run win by bottom club North Duffield, with Richard Marshall’s 5-31 the key.

Drax ended their Vale League days on a high before joining the Senior League, beating Burn by 13 runs thanks to opener Keith Powell’s unbeaten 67.

Hemingbrough and Barmby Moor agreed to a 20-overs a side affair because of the damp conditions and it proved a thriller, Brough winning by three runs after Tom Collins blasted 63 in their 151-3.

Division two champions Copmanthorpe suffered a surprise defeat to Kelfield, whose Neil Atkinson top-scored with 41 in their 143 all out which featured 5-39 by Chris Hall. Cop appeared to be in control at 122-5 but Chris Groom (50) was one of four run outs as a panic-stricken lower order crumbled.

Acomb will be glad to see the back of a poor season although a knock of 39 by 16-year-old Dan Green in defeat against Fulfordgate offers some hope for the future. Max Henderson took three wickets in two overs for Gate.

Stockton & Hopgrove added the third division title to the Prendergast Memorial Cup with victory at ten-man Stillingfleet, who were destroyed by Dan Fairclough (5-37). The Kerrison brothers, Richard and Dave, saw Stockton home with an unbroken 76-run stand.

Stockton finished 17 points ahead of promoted Selby, who were bowled to victory at Burton Salmon by Jeffrey Romans (6-22).

Hirst Courtney’s Jake Wild (69) put on 90 with third-wicket partner Craig Lawson in a thumping 119-run win against Drax II.

Les Milburn’s patient 55 for Thixendale was not enough to hold off Melbourne, whose Malcolm Harrison took man-of-the-match honours with 4-50 and a crucial late order 39.

In division five, promoted Ovington II’s home game with Askham Bryan fell victim to a waterlogged pitch, but they won the championship as rivals York RI lost at Burn II. RI also went up but their 152 proved below par as John Horsfield took 4-33 for Burn.

At Stockton & Hopgrove II, veteran Tony Kerrison made 75 in his final Vale League innings, to pip Thorpe Willoughby II by eight runs.

Carlton Towers edged past Malton & Old Malton II with eight balls to spare thanks to Simon Boddye’s unbeaten 39. Malt’s Derek Searle retired after the game, two weeks after his 70th birthday.

Tadcaster recovered from 32-4 to post 134-8 against Selby II which was enough to squeeze home by 12 runs despite a battling 55 by James Trembath.
