HUNTINGTON saw their grasp on the HPH Vale Cricket League Headley Memorial Trophy slip away in dramatic fashion in the final at Acomb.

Needing 118 to beat Thorp Arch & Boston Spa, the holders were cruising at 108-5 with loads of overs in hand but lost their last five wickets for just nine runs to crash to a one-run defeat.

Thorp’s unlikely victory gives them some silverware in their maiden HPH York Vale League season and will be some compensation after relegation from division four without winning a game.

John Orrell top-scored with 38 as TABS were bowled out for what seemed a below-par score of 117. Colin Stockport took 4-31 for division five promotion-chasers Huntington and was well supported by Stephen Dale (2-10) and Jamie Ross (2-25).

There was little hint of the collapse to come as M Johnson’s 34 soon ate in to TABS’ total but the match was turned on its head with a spectacular collapse.

John Kitson removed Johnson and Thomas Bird came on to take 2-6 from 11 deliveries, including the crucial wicket of Darren Hosford (30) as Huntington’s innings ended in the 30th over.
