SAM DUNN smashed 117 off only 65 balls as Kelfield beat Melbourne in division one of the HPH York Vale Cricket League.

Kelfield were 24-2 before Dunn hit a dozen boundaries and nine sixes, before falling to a diving catch by Ben Shingles (4-35). That ended a blistering 88-run partnership with Matt Walker, whose 74 came off 46 deliveries in Kelfield’s 242 total.

Melbourne were 13-4 before a stand of 74 between Ollie Steels (28) and James Coupland (56) gave them hope but it was not enough. Craig Lawson took 5-49 and man-of-the-match Dunn claimed 3-39 and a catch.

Leaders Ovington overcame an early scare before defeating Stockton & Hopgrove in comprehensive fashion.

Ovington were on the rack at 30-4 – all the wickets falling to Dan Fairclough (4-54). Opener Tom Cookson (78) stood firm amid the carnage and found allies in Joe Whale (52), Stefan Littlewood (37) and Neil Metcalfe (31) to take Ovington to 214-8. Dean Tyler, playing for the first time this season after a shoulder injury, removed Cookson with his first delivery.

Rich Kerrison (56) was Stockton’s only batter in double figures as they were rolled over for 85, Ben Busby ripping through the card with figures of 12-4-34-5.

Burn closed on 222-6 against Wheldrake after being 50-3. Mark Webster (68) led the recovery while Steve Cruise struck an unbeaten 46. Burn’s bowlers had extra pace which reduced Wheldrake to 25-5, before Simon Taylor (42no) took them to 110 all out. Graham Robson grabbed 5-31 and new-ball partner Steve Hunt 3-29.

Askham Bryan won at Clifton Alliance by nine runs after successfully defending 196-6 in which Ben Lodge hit an unbeaten 56.

Clifton set off in positive fashion, Jason Gatus (47) and John Myers (30) putting on 75 for the first wicket. Both fell to Graham Byrne (5-48) as Alliance slid from 113-2 to 187 all out. Hogben, who had earlier scored 46, claimed 4-33.

Hirst Courtney produced a great all-round display to beat division two leaders Thixendale. They held seven catches as Thix were dismissed for 150. Hirst had made 172-7 with Ben Copeland scoring an unbeaten 90.

The seven points Thixendale gleaned from the game leaves them one point ahead of Ovington II who crushed Malton & Old Malton by eight wickets.

Malton crumbled to 76 all out, the league’s reigning Young Player of the Year Charlie Buckley taking 5-26 in 6.4 overs of leg-spin.

Hemingbrough beat Fulfordgate by eight runs in a game which went down to the final over. Hemingbrough posted 185-3 with Johnny Cockerill scoring an unbeaten 86. Alan Baldock (66) batted Fulforgate into a potential winning position. They needed 40 off the last five overs but fell eight runs short, due mainly to tight bowling from Ollie Turvey.

All eyes will be on Ferry Lane this Sunday when joint division three leaders Bishopthorpe and Acomb put their 100 per cent winning records on the line.

Acomb’s latest victory came against Ovington III, Brad Keel (55) and Farath Ansar (60) combining to take Acomb to 211-8.

Stamford Bridge recovered from 16-2 to 192-9 against Burn II, a third-wicket stand of 81 between Josh Moore (71) and Taylor Stanton (33) leading the fightback. Burn’s father and son openers, Ashley Abbott (33) and Patrick Abbott (41), put on 83 before the introduction of spinners David Langton (4-36) and John Moore (4-28) turned the game Bridge’s way.

Thorpe Willoughby II ran up up 179-5 against a rookie Dunnington attack. Dunnington were 64-4 after 23 overs, but skipper Steve Wilson (73no) and Max Wilson (40) made a fight of it before Thorpe emerged victorious.
