A GAME of patience paid off for Kelfield as they won at Ovington on a rain-hit Saturday in the HPH York Vale Cricket League.

Although it was pouring down, the toss was made with agreement that play would start when the weather cleared.

A 20-overs-a-side match was agreed and after eight overs Ovington were 46-5. A stand of 76 between Joe Whale (43) and Dom Kitchen (31 not out) pushed the final score to 122-6. Kelfield's Matt Walker, bowling off a shortened run-up, took 4-21 off four overs.

Kelfield were 43-2 after eight overs, but a stand of 52 between Walker (66no) and his brother Chris (18) put Kelfield in control.

Match-winner Walker finished the job with Jim Still as Kelfield won with ten balls to spare.

In the only other game to reach a finish in the top division, Ben Johnson won at Melbourne by 11 runs in a contest reduced to 30 overs a side.

Martin Reynolds (44) and Paul Morrison shared a 76-run third-wicket stand for the printers who finished on 138-5. Scott Coupland bowled tightly for 1-14 from six overs.

Melbourne's Matt Beevers was injured during the game but batted on with a runner, top scoring in Melbourne's reply of 127 all out. At one stage they were well-placed at 92-2 but suffered a middle-order collapse.

Champions Bishopthorpe finished their campaign with a game against Wheldrake which failed to beat the rain.

Scott Clapham hit a remarkable ton in this match, reduced to 20 overs per side, scoring 110 out of Bishopthorpe's total of 134-8. His innings came from just 55 balls and, after passing his half-century, he didn't face a single dot ball.

Sam Ensor bowled well, taking 3-16 from his six-over spell.

The game was interestingly poised with Wheldrake 33-0 in the sixth over when heavy rain curtailed proceedings.

The clash of the top two teams in division two on Sunday was washed out because Clifton Alliance's pitch was waterlogged.

It means visitors Askham Bryan need only two points from their game against Fulfordgate this Saturday to be crowned champions.

Fulfordgate and Hemingbrough started their game on Saturday but after the opening over, a maiden by Brough's Granville North, heavy rain saw the contest abandoned.

Yapham II and Ovington III opted for a 20-overs-a-side game in division four because of the weather, with the visitors from Knavesmire winning by 12 runs.

Ovington openers Richard Garside (34) and J Taylor (31) put on 70 at seven an over before six wickets fell for the addition of just seven runs as Matthew Stubbings (4-25) took a hat-trick.

Andy Noble (5-23) whipped out the tail, completing his first 'five-for' by removing the last man with the final ball of Ovington’s 108 all out.

Yapham's run chase was led by Sam Noble (42no), who added 46 for the second wicket with Dan Isenstein (20). When 13-year-old debutant Tom Farrell bowled Isenstein, breaking a bail in the process, Yapham lost momentum and finished on 96-7.
