SAM DUNN was the star for Kelfield as they pulled off an upset by beating HPH York Vale Cricket League division one leaders Bishopthorpe by five runs to blow the title race wide open.

Dunn scored almost half of his team’s runs with 62 before picking up four key wickets.

Kelfield were put into bat in helpful conditions and struggled to 128-9 at tea, Ian Holmes taking 4-37.

But Bishopthorpe’s batting looked fragile as both Dunn (4-55) and Matt Walker decimated the top order. Scott Clapham (61) was the only top-seven batsman to make double figures and when he was dismissed Kelfield were in control, Walker finishing with impressive figures of 5-39.

Champions Ovington are right back in the mix after condemning title hopefuls Burn to a second successive defeat.

Ben Morrison, batting at six, top scored with 48 after Tom Armes (40), Stefan Littlewood (38) and Craig Nicholl (33) had kept the scoreboard ticking over as Ovington closed on 211-9.

Leigh Adamson (33) and Tom Burke (43) got Burn off to a good start but both fell to Barry Steele, the Ovington skipper finishing with 3-29 as Burn ended well short of 158-8.

Westow continued to hang on the coattails of the leading pack with a dominant victory against Stockton & Hopgrove.

Openers Mark Earle and Andrew Welford put on another 100 partnership with Earle firing 83 and Welford 42, Earle falling to a great one-handed catch on the boundary by Rich Kerrison.

Ali Fothergill (47no) and Dave Coverdale (35) then enjoyed a 72-run partnership to see Westow to 243-7.

Stockton were bowled out for 79, Adrian Upton recording his second five-for of the season, taking 6-19.

Ben Johnson edged out Wheldrake by three runs in a rain-delayed thriller reduced to 30 overs a side.

Neil Drew (49) and Paul Anderson (29) got the printers off to a decent start with an opening partnership of 61. The stand was ended by Mark Cass who turned the game in Wheldrake's favour with 6-42.

Needing 124 to win, Wheldrake lost two early wickets before Anthony Carter (37) took control, his side seemingly cruising. Loan player Ryan Pepper (4-37) came on to check the charge before Nick Myers took Wheldrake to within eight runs of victory before being bowled, leaving the tail to finish the job.

Two direct hits from Martin Reynolds saw Wheldrake's last two batsmen run out three runs short.

Although the top division managed to fulfil its full programme of fixtures on Saturday it was a different story elsewhere with no matches played in divisions three and four.

Only one Saturday game was played in division two, Fulfordgate beating Hirst Courtney in a 30-over contest.

Hirst struggled to total 76-8, Alan Baldock taking 3-10 from 12 overs which included eight maidens. Fulfordgate knocked off the runs in 15 overs, man-of-the-match Baldock making 50, including ten fours.

Two games did go ahead on Sunday with Parag Mohite shining in Askham Bryan's victory against Hemingbrough with bowling figures of 10-1-28-5 and a boundary-laden 69.

Clifton Alliance thumped South Cave & Brantingham by eight wickets. Ten-man Cave were bowled out for 67, being put on the back foot early on by Will Moll (2-21) and Matt Mellor (2-32) before Lewis Clark cleaned out the lower order with figures of 8.3-3-7-4. Clifton cruised home in 17.5 overs.
