HPH Cup holders Ovington powered past South Cave & Brantingham with a blistering first round batting display on a rain-hit Saturday.

Ovington lost Tom Cookson to the second ball of the innings but, after that, Pete Kelly (116 from 91 balls) and Craig Nicoll (97 from 80 balls) added 172 in 24 overs.

Stefan Littlewood continued his fine form from the Foss Evening League, hitting 57 from 30 balls.

His wicket on 35 overs brought a declaration with the score on 287-2 with the threat of rain in the air. Cave were dismissed for 102, 15-year-old leg-spinner Charlie Buckley taking 5-22.

Kelfield didn’t hang around as they stormed to victory at Westow.

The home openers Mark Earle (35) and Andrew Welford (47) put on 92 but once they departed the innings lost momentum and Westow closed on 143-6 from 32 overs, Chris Walker taking 3-23 from eight overs.

Kelfield’s batsmen set off aggressively with Craig Lawson (63) and Sam Dunn (47 not out) adding 94 for the second wicket as the visitors raced to their target in 25.5 overs.

Stockton & Hopgrove won their first game of the season by beating Askham Bryan by five wickets in a low-scoring encounter.

Stockton’s Andy Gordon bowled four successive wicket maidens on his way to 4-16 as Askham were bowled out for 78.

Pete Wood made Stockton work hard with economical figures of 8-1-11-1 but Askham simply didn’t have enough runs on the board.

Clifton Alliance completed an eight-wicket victory over Fulfordgate on Sunday when weather was not an issue. Fulfordgate relied on a dogged 42 from Alan Baldock but they were bowled out for 102. Matthew Knowles was the pick of the Clifton bowlers with 4-26.

John Myers (41no) and Jake Atkinson (34) made short work of the chase.

Dunnington’s hopes of pulling off a Scothern Construction Cup shock were blown apart by Malton & Old Malton II’s dynamic opening bowlers.

Will Scofield (6-18) and Ollie Varey (4-8) skittled the division four youngsters from Dunnington for just 28 in 12.1 overs.

Division two side Malton had posted 182 all out thanks to Tom Pinder (40) and Grant Stephens (61). Greg Ashcroft took 4-29 for Dunnington.

Pocklington found batting first soggy going as they crept to 30-5 from 15 overs against tight Bishopthorpe II bowling and fielding.

Simon Baty made 45 not out to see Pock post a modest 94-7.

Bish, the trophy holders, also found the going difficult but Ed Bindloss (54no) and son Angus Bindloss (20no) safely saw them home by seven wickets with an unbeaten 58 partnership.

The game at Stillingfleet against Yapham II was reduced to 20 overs per team because of safety concerns.

Yapham struggled to 58-8, despite the Fleet bowlers all taking it easy because of the slippery conditions underfoot. Second-wicket pair Rob Beilby and Andy Leech reached the required total in only eight overs with Leech hitting a 23-ball 32.

Because so many ties were affected by rain, the HPH York Vale League have delayed the draw for the second round of both competitions until after this weekend.
