OVINGTON turned the tables on Bishopthorpe to lift the HPH Cup at Acomb.

They gained revenge for last season's final defeat against the Bishops who were denied a third successive victory in the competition.

Bowlers dominated throughout with Ovington successfully defending a modest 139-8 from their 40 overs.

Bishopthorpe won the toss and invited Ovington to bat first and kept things tight early on.

The breakthrough came when Ian Holmes bowled Neil Metcalfe, and two overs later Pete Kelly was run out by Scott Reeves. An over later Alex Bindloss took the wicket of danger man Craig Nicoll, leaving Ovington 28-3 in the 12th over.

Barry Steel set about rebuilding with patient 20 before losing his leg stump to Matthew Riley while Ben Morrison top scored with 27 from 75 balls. Morrison was bowled by Reeves who finished with 4-36, but Stefan Littlewood hit a quick 23no pushing the final total to 139-8 at tea.

Bishopthorpe made a solid start, despite losing Steve Eyre (6) early on, caught off the bowling of Barry Steele, reaching 42-1 in 16 overs.

Ovington then made a double bowling change that was to decisively turn the game in their favour, Neil Metcalfe came into the attack and picked up a double wicket maiden in his second over.

First Mike Dale (13) chipped to mid-off, then Scott Clapham was given out lbw for 23. At the other end, veteran Dave Brummitt bowled his 10 overs for just 16 runs. Metcalfe picked up two more wickets to finish with 4-25 and leave Bishopthorpe in all sorts of trouble at 54-7.

Reeves showed some real fight, top scoring with 26. Bindloss was left on 14 not out when Riley was the last man out, bowled by Steele to clinch a 29-run victory.
