SELBY-BASED Thorpe Willoughby Cricket Club is celebrating success after securing a £40,000 grant from a Biffa Award - a multi-million pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK.

The redevelopment and expansion project, which was awarded funding under Biffa Award’s Recreation theme, aims to increase the number of people participating in sport – particularly cricket – in the local community. Funding will enable Thorpe Willoughby CC to replace and extend the existing cricket net with a safe, modern England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) approved facility.

The new two-lane facility will double the current capacity for participation in cricket practice, allowing five ECB-qualified coaches to offer sessions to increased numbers. Said club chairman Dennis Powell: “Biffa Award’s funding will provide a safe and secure environment for our seniors to practise and for our junior coaching sessions.”

Head coach Andy Kirk was also delighted, adding: “Our coaching team will be able to use this facility to improve our juniors and increase the junior section numbers.”
