YORK Vale Veterans were edged out of the Grey Fox Trophy in their first foray in the competition at Fishlake on Sunday.

The Doncaster area team won with an over to spare after the Vale side scored 134-4 on a decent strip.

Ray Adamson top scored with 31 (retired) and Pete Fairclough (23), Howard Leadley (18), Alan Baldock (17) and Paul Thornton (15) all made valuable contributions to what was felt to be a slightly under par total. Neville Allan (2-30), Derek Chapman (1-13) and Keith Best (1-21) were the pick of the Fishlake bowlers.

After tea Fishlake were pegged back by an excellent spell of 1-10 by Pete Eastwood paired with 1-29 from Baldock and were 49-2 at halfway drinks. John Patrick’s 2-23 helped to keep things tight but the Fishlake batsmen started to open their shoulders and ran out eventual six-wicket winners.
