STILLINGFLEET beat Acomb in a thrilling last-over finish at Stamford Bridge to lift the Prendergast Memorial Cup for the first time in their history.
Chasing Acomb’s 162 all out, Fleet looked sunk at 129-8 but a chanceless 35-run ninth-wicket partnership between Rob Bielby (14no) and Chris Woodfine (19no) got them home with four balls to spare.
Acomb’s innings was dominated by Steve Lennox. Dropped on 20, the opener went on to make a superb 90. But none of the other Acomb batsmen could stick around long enough to build a big partnership as wickets fell regularly, principally to Chris Gill (4-38) and Woodfine (3-33).
It was a similar story for Stillingfleet’s batsmen, none of whom could better Mike Nielsen’s 27. Adam Stroughair’s great efforts with the ball were rewarded with 4-24, supported by Robert Littlewood (3-45). With Stillingfleet 34 runs short and only two wickets remaining, Acomb were favourites to win a tight game, but the experienced Bielby and Woodfine had other ideas.
