SMART thinking by Stockton & Hopgrove all-rounder Kalum Perera helped the HPH York Vale Cricket League secure a deal with Sainsbury’s.

The Sri Lankan-born all-rounder, who works at the supermarket’s Foss Islands store in York, knew the league were on the lookout for businesses to support the new teas award initiative.

He persuaded store manager Neil Bartram to help back the scheme with each Vale League club receiving a box of Sainsbury’s own branded Red Leaf tea.

Neil, a former junior at Cleethorpes, said: “Sainsbury’s are delighted to support York Vale Cricket League and as the world’s largest retailer of Fairtrade products, supply our own label tea to keep the players refreshed all season.

“There is nothing better than a good brew during a cricket match. By drinking Sainsbury’s Fairtrade tea, players will be supporting communities in the countries where our product is grown – India, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Malawi.”

This week some of Kalum’s Stockton team-mates popped in to the Foss Islands store to thank Neil and his staff for the gesture.

The tea is certainly working wonders for the S&H club with the firsts joint top in division one and the second string well placed in division four.
