Hairs and Kay lead York Cricket Club charge

CHAMPIONS York moved up to third in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League with a 139-run victory at Appleby Frodingham.

The victory was achieved on the back of two outstanding individual displays, with Oliver Hairs top-scoring on 93 out of York’s 253-9, while Nick Kay’s all-round ability shone through in his 42 runs and 2-16 return from nine overs.

Skipper Dan Woods won the toss and chose to bat first, but young paceman Jack Forrester (2-42) reduced the visitors to 35-2.

Hairs, however, settled in to anchor the innings and his 50 came off 77 balls with seven fours.

A partnership of 73 for the fifth wicket with Kay saw the pair advance to score onto 166. A century seemed on the cards until Duncan Heath trapped Hairs lbw.

’Keeper Steve Crossley (27) added 47 with Kay to push the total beyond 200 and Woods finished the innings by hitting Nick White (4-89) for six off the last ball.

Appleby Frodingham’s reply got off to a bad start when Kay bowled Heath in the second over before a run had been scored and they were quickly reduced to 24-3.

Tony Manning (48) and White put on 44 but Woods (4-38) broke the partnership.

Tom Pringle (2-31) backed up his skipper as the youngsters in the hosts’ lower order proved no match for York’s experienced spin pairing.

Fittingly, Kay sealed the win when his throw from the deep ran out Keiran Watson.
