York Cricket Club president John Leaf dies aged 89

YORK Cricket Club president John Leaf has died in York Hospital, aged 89, seven months after being injured in a car accident at Easingwold.

Born in Escrick in 1922, Leaf was educated at Pocklington School and was a farmer, retiring from Rawcliffe Moor Farm in 1988.

He played cricket for Escrick Park, Crockey Hill Wanderers and York. Leaf, and chairman John Temple, played a major part in organising York’s move from Wigginton Road to their current Shipton Road base in the mid-1960s.

A former member of Ganton Golf Club, Leaf became chairman of York CC before taking over as president.

Along with his wife, Di, to whom he was married for 65 years, Leaf followed the club home and away.

A funeral service was held at York Crematorium.
