PHASE two of York Sports Club’s £1.4 million clubhouse project is kicking into gear.

Demolition is expected to start at Clifton Park in the next few days, with building work on the Shipton Road venue due to be finished in June.

The 22-acre site houses York Rugby Union Club, York Cricket Club, York Tennis Club and York Squash Club, with more than 1,000 members gathered under the banner of York Sports Club.

Officials are delighted that the eight-year project to replace their old 1960s building with a new two-storey clubhouse is finally nearing completion.

The first phase of the scheme, which was opened in 2009, included six changing rooms, a function room seating more than 200 people and a balcony overlooking the cricket pitch, while phase two will house a new members’ bar, function room and meeting rooms.

Initially, the old lounge bar will remain open, while an adjoining section will be demolished to make way for the new two-storey building.

Nick Elliott, who has helped to oversee the project, said: “We are hoping the work will be done in June and it can’t come too soon.

“It is going to be one of the most outstanding facilities in the north of England. Everybody would like to have facilities like this – not only our members, but every visiting club too.

“Phase one has been very well received. It was badly needed and has done exactly what we hoped it would.

“The only problem is it is not yet finished. It was designed to function as a whole, so we can’t wait for it all to be open.”

Elliott added: “The overall cost is £1.4 million. We have had assistance from the Rugby Football Union, the England and Wales Cricket Board and our main club sponsor Grantside, and the members have contributed.

“We have been working at it since 2004 and it will be great to see it finished.”

Elliott stressed that the clubhouse was not solely for the use of member clubs, adding: “It has been very well received in the north York area.

“There is a lot of community use, plus functions and conferencing, and we will be looking to increase that come June.”
