A REVENGE mission by Yorkshire Academy denied York Cricket Club a second consecutive Oxbridge Yorkshire ECB County Premier League and cup double.
The Clifton Park side clinched the league title with a win over closest rivals Academy the previous weekend, but the Tykes youngsters avenged that defeat in winning the League Cup at Headingley.
York skipper Marcus Wood elected to bat first in overcast conditions.
The visitors suffered a severe setback when, with the seventh ball of the match, Academy skipper John Blain removed Dan Wilson with a leg side delivery for two.
Duncan Snell and Simon Mason stabilised the York innings, adding 88 runs before Snell was caught off Azeem Rafiq for 38.
Mason followed 13 runs later, also caught off Rafiq, having made 53.
At the halfway stage, York had reached 98-2 and for the remainder of the innings, Alex Collins held things together with an unbeaten 50.
However, none of his colleagues managed to play a substantial enough innings in support and they closed on 207-7.
The Academy used eight bowlers to keep the scoring rate in check, with Rafiq the pick with 3-31 in his ten overs.
Academy openers Joe Root and Gary Ballance gave their side a fine start with a partnership of 102.
However, both fell at that total, Root for 38 and Ballance for 50.
Geldart went cheaply, but a further stand between Jonny Bairstow and Charlie Roebuck added 57 in only 26 minutes.
Rafiq went without scoring, but Bairstow went on to make 47 before he was caught by Collins off Wilson’s bowling, attempting to hit the winning boundary.
The Academy completed a four-wicket victory in the next over, reaching their target with 35 balls to spare.
The umpires awarded the man of the match to Bairstow for his fine catch behind the wicket to remove Wilson and for his 47.
York’s Black Sheep Yorkshire Trophy final is likely to be delayed until next year.
