York Cricket Club's double attempt falls just short after defeat in League Cup final against Yorkshire Academy

TITLE-WINNING York Cricket Club came up just short in their bid for the double in the Oxbridge Yorkshire ECB County Premier League.

The Clifton Parkers lost to Yorkshire Academy by four wickets in the League Cup final at Headingley yesterday, only seven days after claiming the league championship for the third successive year.

Batting first, York reached 208-6 with Simon Mason top-scoring on 53 and Alex Collins finishing on 52 not out.

Several York players got into double figures and then got out, leaving them some 30 runs short of a realistically defendable total.

The Academy’s openers then embarked on a century stand to take the game away from the visitors and they won with five overs to spare.

Former York player Jonny Bairstow hit 48 and Gary Ballance made 52.

On Saturday, York rounded off their league campaign with a comprehensive five-wicket win at Cleethorpes, their 20th success of the season.

Cleethorpes won the toss and opted to bat, but could only muster 131 all out in the face of some superb bowling from Tom Bartram.

The paceman claimed 6-45 from his 12 overs to spearhead the visitors’ attack, while Daniel Woods took 2-12 from four overs.

Opener Ishan Mutaliph top-scored for the hosts with 48, while Alex Osmond hit 35, but only one other player made double figures in a desperate 30-over capitulation.

Nick Kay and Neil Laidlaw were the other wicket-takers for York.

Once again, overseas ace Dan Wilson led the way for York with 58 at the top of the order to take his record tally for the season to 1,542 at an average of 73.43.

Ashley Hulme saw his side home in the 27th over with an unbeaten 37.
