YORK Under-19s reached the Yorkshire Finals Day of the Natwest Club T20 competition despite a day of mixed fortunes at Dunnington Cricket Club.

After two early wickets in their opening game against the hosts, a partnership of 66 between Toby Giddings (38) and skipper Oliver Leedham (27) got York back on track.

Keon Williams (3-33) took three wickets and the visitors were hampered by three run-outs, but a valuable late 13 from Sam Elliot helped boost the total to 107 all used with two overs unused.

Dunnington’s top four managed only six runs between them as they slumped to 25-5, with Leedham (2-14), Ted Patmore, Sam Elliot and Cameron Burdass taking wickets.

Jack Spofforth threatened to take the game away with 44 but his departure, caught and bowled by Tom Spearman, set up a pulsating finale.

It came down to final over with Ted Patmore charged with defending 12 runs. Only two singles came from the first four balls but then a slip in the field resulted in the ball going for six and, when the final delivery looked to be going for a boundary, only a fantastic diving stop prevented it, restricting the scoring to two, giving York their third win of the competition.

York's second game of the day against a Harrogate side containing a number of established first-teamers was much tougher.

Two wickets each from Leedham (2-39) and Cameron Burdass (2-31) could not prevent Gate's powerful batting line-up reaching 163-5 from 20 overs.

Richard Brown (14) and Oliver Scurry (11) got the reply off to a good start, with Ted Patmore contributing 16, but, despite a late charge from Alex Lilley (21), Ben Robinson (12) who hit the only six of the innings, and Sam Elliot (16), they finished 33 runs short and were left with an anxious wait to see if results elsewhere would help see them through.

The eventually finished fourth in the overall standings, thanks to their opening round victory over Sheriff Hutton Bridge as four teams finished tied in the table, and that means they get the chance to avenge the defeat by Harrogate in the first semi-final at Acomb on Sunday, July 10.

The winners will me Driffield Town or Beverley Town in the final.
