YORK have created history by becoming Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League champions following a dramatic afternoon at St George’s Road, Harrogate.

The Clifton Park side sealed their eighth title in nine years, and in doing so stand alone as the most successful side in the competition's history, having won it on 14 occasions, one more than Scarborough.

Having at one stage trailed the leaders by 24 points, Nick Kay's team clawed their way back into contention with a run of 12 victories culminating in a 12-run triumph at Harrogate which wrapped the title up with a match to spare.

Against the side who led the table in the early part of the season, York went against type after seven matches chasing targets by batting first, but lost Adam Whatley, bowled by Russell White with the total on 23.

However, although boundaries were difficult to come by earlier on, the visitors' Simon Lambert and Liam McKendry took advantage of some wayward bowling, with Lambert becoming the first to reach 50 from 85 balls, his partner getting there in 78 balls.

The partnership, a season’s best for the second wicket of 158, was ended when George Ross took a good, low catch in the covers off Jonathan Tattersall to dismiss McKendry for 74, Lambert soon being caught at mid-off for 79.

The visitors then lost their way somewhat, with the next five batsmen all reaching double figures but no-one going beyond 20 as the total reached 264-8.

Sam Davies got the hosts of to a positive start with a run-a-ball 27 before his wicket by Ryan McKendry on 48 triggered a collapse of three wickets for two runs, the same player having Ryan Conor caught and bowled before Tom Pringle trapped skipper Ross lbw for a duck.

The innings might have been over much sooner had Lambert held a straightforward catch when Tattersall was four with the score on 53.

York had plenty of time to dwell on their error as, for the next 35 overs, the fourth-wicket pair of Tattersall and James Latham added 155 and looked like taking their side to victory.

With 60 needed from 48 balls, Latham fell to a good running catch in the deep by Liam McKendry, and Ryan McKendry added another wicket in the same over to finish with 4-77 from 17 overs.

Tattersall reached his century but was unable to get much of the strike late on, which left 16 required from Pringle’s final chaotic over.

It began with the run out of Geeson-Brown and contained two further wickets, including Tattersall stumped by Tom Brooks for 108, and concluded with last man Abdi-Hasan Ahmed defending surrounded by an array of close catchers.
