YORK surged to the summit of the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League after recording a tenth straight victory.

An unbeaten century from Liam McKendry (109no) guided them to a five-wicket win at bottom of the table Hull and gained revenge for their single run defeat against their Humberside rivals in June.

It was a victory which puts them two points ahead of Barnsley after their match with Yorkshire Academy was abandoned because of rain.

The home side lost opener Tim Appleyard in the fourth over when he cut a ball from Charlie Elliot straight to Ryan McKendry at backward point.

The early breakthrough supported Kay’s decision to insert the hosts on a green wicket but, in deference to its appearance, only one wicket fell in the next 30 overs. York’s captain was the beneficiary of an lbw decision that brought an end to Andy Simpson’s innings on 36 but a 65-run partnership with David Barrick put the home side in the ascendancy.

That position was further enhanced by a stand of 89 between Barrick, who reached his half-century off 59 balls, and captain Chris Grey.

Barrick’s departure, trapped lbw by Ryan McKendry for 83, signalled the start of a collapse as Hull lost four wickets for 14 runs in the space of six overs, Tom Pringle picking up one and McKendry a further two.

Grey’s fourth 50 of the competition came as the total passed 200 but the loss of two further partners, both to the spin of Pringle, hampered his attempts to take his side to a total they might have expected given they had been 173-2 with 20 overs left.

The skipper was ninth out - ‘keeper Tom Brooks' quick reactions and direct hit left him short of his ground - and, six balls later, the innings came to a close when McKendry bowled Jahangir Alam with the total on 238.

Simpson made up for the disappointment of his failure with the bat by dismissing both York openers cheaply. Simon Lambert was caught behind in the second over and Adam Whatley followed seven overs later, but not before adding a breezy run-a-ball 26 containing five fours.

Liam McKendry was joined by younger brother Ryan with the total on 43-2 and, once the opening pairing of Simpson and Charlie Hodgson had been seen off, batting became easier.

Liam was the first to reach 50, doing so off 56 balls, and, as the partnership approached 150, Ryan passed the same mark off 63.

With the total on 202, the bowling side finally achieved a breakthrough when Hodgson had the younger McKendry caught by ‘keeper James Phillips for 64.

Alex Collins was lbw in the same bowler’s next over and McKendry played out 13 deliveries on 99 before finding the single required to complete his seventh Yorkshire League century - this one coming off 116 balls with 12 fours and three sixes.

Hodgson (3-67) picked up the wicket of Brooks (14) with just a handful of runs required and it was left to McKendry to wrap up the victory, which he did with consecutive boundaries.
