ADAM WHATLEY and Ryan McKendry shared eight wickets as York comfortably beat Sheffield Collegiate in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League.

Having dismissed the Abbeydale Park side for 130, the visitors then cruised home for the loss of just two wickets with Simon Lambert finishing unbeaten on 72.

Openers Nick Gaywood and Thomas Dunn began cautiously and scored just 11 from the opening seven overs when the first wicket fell.

Dunn gloved an attempted hook off Whatley through to wicket-keeper Tom Brooks and, in the same bowler’s next over, Gaywood played back and was trapped lbw.

That brought together danger men William Root and Simon Guy, with 700 runs between them already this season, and York knew the pair held the key to the home side’s chances of posting a formidable total.

Guy began positively - taking nine from an over off the otherwise economical Chris Hunter, whose opening five had cost just 12 runs.

But, in among some wayward deliveries, Whatley was proving to be a handful and he picked up the crucial wicket of Guy, caught down the leg side with the total on 42.

Four balls later, he produced an unplayable delivery to bowl debutant Dan Priestley for no score.

Whatley sent down seven overs, finishing with 4-28, and he was replaced by Charlie Elliot midway through the innings' only meaningful partnership as Root added 44 with Benjamin Flanagan for the fifth wicket.

Despite finishing as top scorer with 25, Root never looked at ease and eventually departed to a low catch at slip by Liam McKendry, off younger brother Ryan, with the total on 88.

The spinner picked up a second wicket in his next over when bowling Flanagan for 21.

Elliot produced back-to-back maidens and was rewarded with the wicket of Josh Varley as the total crept to 101-7 before the McKendrys reprised their roles to account for Ben Fielding.

A brief flurry from Matt Lee (20) took the score to 130 but a mix up between the ninth wicket pair resulted in Luke Shutt been run out from Chris Burn’s throw and the same fielder was on hand to wrap up the innings - catching Lee at backward point off the following ball as McKendry finished with 4-30.

Whatley went in the opening over of York's reply, caught behind slashing at a delivery from Shutt but the bowling side had to wait 20 overs for their next success, by which time York had moved on to 88.

Liam McKendry looked in good touch, striking seven boundaries in his 41, and by the time he fell lbw to home skipper Matt Dixon the result was already beyond doubt.

Lambert passed 50 for the seventh time in 11 Yorkshire League innings and struck his second six of the afternoon to bring up victory in the 29th over. A second consecutive win consolidates York’s fourth place position in the league table and keeps them in touch with the leaders as the season reaches the half-way point.
