YORK overcame the disappointment of losing their opening two games in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier Cricket League by trouncing champions Yorkshire Academy.

Spinners Jack Leaning and Tom Pringle shared seven wickets as the Academy were bowled out for 127 after Adam Whatley’s opening burst cut through the top order.

The hosts went into the game in need of a fillip and the inclusion of Leaning, released from Yorkshire duties, provided it.

Not everything went to plan for the former Yorkshire Academy captain, as he was trapped lbw by Jordan Thompson’s first ball for 12 with the score on 39.

Opener Simon Lambert (60) was dropped on three but made the most of his good fortune, going on to reach a half-century off 71 balls, which included three sixes.

Lambert and Liam McKendry looked comfortable at the crease, despite some hostile short pitched bowling, and were able to add 95 from 16 overs before Lambert was bowled off his pads by James Logan, the first of three wickets for the spinner.

Whatley (12) was caught at slip off Karl Carver just prior to McKendry reaching his second half-century of the weekend.

He had moved on to 65, and the total on to 195, when Thompson returned to the attack and took a juggled catch off his own bowling.

Carver bowled Richard Love and followed that four overs later with the wicket of Collins, trapped lbw for 40.

The score at that stage was 230-6 with seven overs remaining, but the last four wickets added four runs.

Carver finished with figures of 5-36 and Logan picked up the final two wickets for a final analysis of 3-71.

Whatley then had Academy skipper Eliot Callis caught at slip in the fifth over and he picked up the wickets of Mosun Hussain and Yasser Imtiaz, both courtesy of keeper Tom Brooks, to leave the score on 44-3.

Mathew Waite helped steady the innings, adding 35 for the fourth wicket with opener Ben Ainsley, who went on to be top scorer with 41.

The introduction of Leaning’s off-spin turned the match decisively in the home side’s favour as he struck with wickets in each of his first two overs.

Ainsley was trapped lbw and then Thompson, having hit the previous ball for six, spooned a simple chance to Collins at extra cover.

Waite was given out lbw to Pringle and when Leaning picked up the wicket of Carver the same way the visitors had slumped to 98-7.

The final three wickets added a further 29 thanks largely to Jared Warner’s 21.

Leaning finished with 4-26 from ten overs, while Pringle picked up the final two wickets for figures of 3-26.
