YORK kept up the pressure on leaders Yorkshire Academy at the top of the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier Cricket League with victory over fourth-placed Doncaster Town.

A century from Simon Lambert and four wickets from Ryan McKendry were the stand-out performances as York became the first visiting side to win at Town Fields this season.

York won the toss and chose to bat, with Lambert and skipper Daniel Woods sharing a second consecutive opening stand beyond 50, this time adding 93 in 21 overs.

Woods, having safely negotiated the new ball, was then bowled by Graeme Attenborough attempting an expansive drive for 28.

The next 16 overs yielded 96 runs as the visitors took control. Lambert, now the league's leading run scorer, had just reached his century from 113 balls when Liam McKendry, having made 46 from 45 balls was bowled by Bradley Heaps.

The hosts were offered a glimmer of hope when Lambert was out four overs later with the score on 209, Curtis Free taking an excellent low return catch to dismiss the opener for 116.

Nick Kay joined Ryan McKendry, and in making 34 became only the 15th player to pass 4,000 Yorkshire League runs in the modern era.

The pair added 105 in just 12 overs as the bowling side wilted in the oppressive heat.

McKendry was fifth out, caught at deep square leg for 75, made off just 65 balls, with the total on 318.

Attenborough finished with 4-78, picking up three wickets late on, including that of Kay, as the visitors finish on 327-7.

Doncaster’s attempt to chase down an unlikely victory began well, Simon Widdup hitting nine fours on his way to a half-century from 45 balls. His 51 was the lion's share of a 78-run opening stand with Felix Odell.

Wicket-keeper Liam McKendry enjoyed a productive afternoon, collecting the first of five stumpings when Widdup was deceived by Woods.

Fellow opener Odell suffered a similar fate facing the first ball of Ryan McKendry’s spell, leaving the hosts on 90-2.

Stuart Guy made 30 before he was run out attempting a sharp single. Gareth Fenton’s sharp throw was well gathered by Ryan McKendry and Guy was forced to depart.

McKendry took the next three wickets to fall - Attenborough (37) and Alex Gosney (20) among his victims to end with figures of 4-44.

Tom Pringle (3-51) got in on the act, his leg-spin proving too much for Town’s lower order.

Only Ryan Capstick, with 22, made any impression as three of the last four batsmen failed to score a run.

Woods completed proceedings when Jonathan Cowan was last out with the score on 211, York wrapping over victory with almost six overs to spare.

York’s win keeps them within five points of leaders Academy. The county youngsters' defeat of Barnsley means the Clifton Park side have an 11-point cushion and a game in hand over their nearest challengers in third.
