NICK KAY hailed an “incredible” night of cricket in York as Clifton Park hosted Yorkshire’s first XI for a Twenty20 friendly, writes Stuart Martel.

A crowd of about 600 watched Andrew Gale’s Yorkshire Vikings beat a Yorkshire League XI by 118 runs on a superb batting track.

York secretary Kay is hopeful the fixture - one of three Twenty20 friendlies played by the Vikings this week - may be repeated next season.

“Yorkshire played it very seriously - there was no messing about,” said Kay.

“I think they had been told after last Friday’s Twenty20 defeat by Northamptonshire that every single place was up for grabs.

“All the big players played well. Gale, Jonny Bairstow, Adam Lyth and Kane Williamson all batted well and hit it a long way.

“Then when they bowled Jack Brooks and Liam Plunkett were superb.

“Everybody enjoyed it and it was incredible to have the full strength Yorkshire team playing here in York.”

He added: “There is a chance they may look to do it again next season because they enjoyed their time at York.

“They definitely enjoyed the pitch. Liam McKendry prepared a belter of a pitch to play on.”

Yorkshire compiled a huge 237-3 off their 20 overs, with New Zealand international Kane Williamson top-scoring with 95.

The League select XI were then bowled out for 119, with Adil Rashid taking 3-31.
