A REMARKABLE game of 17 wickets and only 132 runs at Weetwood saw York beat Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier Cricket League rivals Yorkshire Academy by three wickets.

Reigning champions York, bidding for a seventh successive title, opened up a 15-point gap at the top of the table on Saturday in a bizarre encounter in almost unplayable conditions.

Duncan Snell recorded career-best Yorkshire League figures of 6-32 as the home side were skittled for 65 in 20.2 overs after winning the toss and opting to bat.

Only four batsmen reached double figures in the match, with York made to fight all the way for their winning total of 67-7.

Snell and Glen Richmond (2-25) reduced the Academy to 29-4, with Nick Kay entering the attack to claim 2-4 from three overs.

Barney Gibson was the only county player to make double figures, top-scoring with 11.

Any thoughts of York strolling to victory were dispelled when they lost their first three wickets for only four runs.

Oliver Hairs made 17 but his side were rocking at 33-6 before Tom Pringle played the decisive innings with 22.

He hit five fours in a partnership of 29 with Ryan McKendry (13no) that took York to within four of victory.

When McKendry hit the winning runs, his 40-ball innings was easily the longest of the match.

Yesterday, Snell starred with the bat as his unbeaten 157 off 165 balls helped York thrash Hull by 146 runs.

Snell hit 15 fours and six sixes in his knock as he and Liam McKendry, with 102 from 84 balls, shared a stand of 239 for the second wicket as York totalled 329-3 declared from 50 overs.

Hull were then dismissed for 183 in 51.2 overs, with spinner Pringle taking 4-42 and Jack Leaning 3-51.

Opening bowlers Richmond and Kay took a wicket apiece.

The win allowed York to increase their lead at the top of the table to 20 points after Yorkshire Academy’s game at Harrogate was abandoned due to rain.

Harrogate made 228-8 and the Academy were well set to win at 132-2 off 30.3 overs when the rain intervened.
