SOME 110 overs of cricket could go a long way to deciding whether York Cricket Club can land a seventh successive Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League title.

The table-topping Clifton Parkers travel to second-placed Yorkshire Academy knowing victory would give them breathing space at the summit.

Skipper Dan Woods’ men met their main league rivals in the semi-final of the Yorkshire League Cup last weekend and it was York who edged a rain-affected, affair by three runs under the Duckworth Lewis method.

Another close encounter is on the cards, believes Woods, and he knows his team must be on top form to prevail once again if they are to extend their seven-point advantage at the head of the table.

“It’s a massively important game and the Academy are an extremely strong side,” said Woods.

“They really looked the part last Sunday and we are going to have to be at our best to compete with them.

“We are confident in our ability. The wicket was very green and it was seaming around with the new ball last weekend. Our batting was outstanding and we will have to adapt to the conditions again.

“Nothing will be decided this weekend and there are important games to come but if we can replicate the standards we set last week then we will be there or thereabouts.”

York follow their Academy clash by entertaining Hull on Sunday – a very different clash given the Humberside outfit have struggled this season.

But Woods added: “Their results have picked up quite noticeably. They are putting a run together and, again, to have two games in two days is never easy.

“It would be stupid to think only about tomorrow’s game and not recognise we have another tough game ahead.”

Duncan Snell and Jack Leaning open the batting against the Academy, with Alex Collins and Oli Hairs, who batted so well against the Yorkshire youngsters last weekend, also set to play prominent roles.

Woods misses the Hull match as he is on Minor Counties duty with Cheshire. Simon Lambert comes into the side.
