YORKSHIRE legend Jim Love has been giving York Cricket Club’s players individual tutoring as they bid to hit the heights in t20 this weekend.

The Clifton Parkers’ head coach oversees a squad bidding to take the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League t20 Finals Day by storm and qualify for the national stages of the ECB National Club t20 competition.

York will meet Driffield at Scarborough’s North Marine Road ground in a four-team knock-out on Sunday. Should they beat the East Yorkshire outfit, they will play either Doncaster or Sheffield Collegiate later in the day.

Captain Dan Woods misses the competition because he is on Minor Counties duty with Cheshire but, even in his absence, he believes York have a squad capable of winning.

“Jim Love comes into his own in these things,” said Woods. “He does a lot of work with individual players and works hard on the preparation.

“The way things are shaping up it looks like we have got a strong side for t20.”

York must first concentrate on Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League action as they entertain Sheffield United tomorrow.

They have an 11-point lead at the top of the table as the hunt goes on for their seventh successive league title, and should be confident against a Sheffield side rooted with Castleford at the bottom of the ladder.

But Woods added: “You have to remind yourself that if you start looking too far ahead that’s when you get into trouble.

“Teams at the bottom of the league have been beating those near the top. Sheffield United are always a tough nut to crack. We will have to work really hard.

“We are obviously thrilled with the position that we are in. The additions to the team – Jack Leaning and Jonny Moxon – have been phenomenal. These are young lads and they love winning and are used to winning.

“That helps the other players and boosts your confidence and your levels of urgency.

“We are on a good run of form but we have to keep working hard.”

Vice-captain Nick Kay turns out for the seconds on Saturday, with Oliver Hairs back in the squad and Simon Lambert, who has been prodigious with the bat for the seconds, continues.

Wicketkeeper Nigel Durham is also back with Tom Love dropping out.

Kay comes back into the squad for the t20 competition and is joined by Marcus Wood, Glen Richmond and Toby Pratt, who opens the batting for the seconds.

Leaning, however, is ineligible.
