YORK captain Dan Woods cemented his place at the top of the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier Cricket League bowling rankings with his stunning ten-wicket haul at Castleford.

The former Lancashire second-teamer skittled Cas on Saturday, taking an incredible 10-42 from 16.4 overs of left-arm spin.

In becoming only the sixth player to take all ten wickets in a league innings – and the first since Sheffield Collegiate’s Bill Croft in 1987 – Woods took his 2013 league tally to 59.

Woods, who has taken a wicket every 20 balls and achieved six five-wicket hauls, said: “Nick Kay, our secretary and vice-captain, is a bit of a cricket badger and he was straight into the record books afterwards, telling me about the history of people taking ten wickets.

“It was a great thing to do, but the most important thing was that we won the game and managed to get eight points.

“That was the main thing and as long as we keep winning and stay at the top of the league, that is all I am worried about.”

Woods, who has also starred for Cheshire in the Minor Counties competition this season, was typically modest in assessing his feat in the 138-run win at Castleford.

The skipper praised York’s batsmen for racking up 295-9 to set up the victory, and also the efforts of his fellow bowlers in creating pressure on the home batting line-up.

“One of the reasons for me doing it was that the bowlers at the other end bowled so well to help set it up,” he said.

“Ryan McKendry had no luck and Jack Leaning bowled well without getting any luck either. They probably bowled as well as I did, but I had that bit of luck and picked up the wickets.

“Liam McKendry did well behind the stumps and he also batted outstandingly well for his 97 not out. He’s in tremendous form at the moment.

“We’ve got a strong batting line-up and Liam batted well with the tail, so credit should go to him for getting us into a position where we had a good total to bowl to.”
