A YORKSHIRE trophy treble is now the focus for York Cricket Club in the wake of their Kingfisher Beer Cup agony.

The Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League leaders this week reassessed their targets after exiting the national knockout in a rain-affected tie with Doncaster Town.

A seventh successive league crown remains the primary aim for the Clifton Parkers, closely followed by the League Cup and the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy.

York take a 16-point lead into tomorrow’s game at Cleethorpes, but there will be no complacency in the visiting ranks.

Second-placed Harrogate take on struggling Hull tomorrow before playing their game in hand against Yorkshire Academy on Sunday, so defeat for York could see their lead wiped out.

Vice-captain Nick Kay said: “If we put the disappointment of Sunday’s cup game to one side, to be 16 points ahead in the league at this stage is very pleasing. Winning the league is always the priority.

“From our point of view it was good to see Harrogate lose to Barnsley last weekend because they had beaten everybody else apart from us.

“It exposed one or two of their frailties and showed they are not invincible, while we managed to beat the weather in our game with Appleby Frodingham.

“The Academy also got beaten by Doncaster last weekend and with them being in third place that gave us another game advantage over them.”

York knocked Cleethorpes out of the League Cup earlier in the campaign, but Kay is wary of their star players.

“We played all right against Cleethorpes when we beat them in the league knockout but they are quite a dangerous side,” he said.

“We always have respect for them because they have four or five guys in their team who are high up in the league statistics.

“Bill Kirby is very consistent at the top of the order and Alex Osmond is probably the top all-rounder in the league. He always takes a lot of wickets with his leg-spin and gets runs.

“It is our longest trip and we always play on a wicket that is tailored to their strengths. They don’t tend to lose too many against the top sides.”

York will welcome back skipper Dan Woods – the league’s leading wicket-taker with 43 victims – and opener Jack Leaning, who tops the league batting averages with 614 runs at 122.8.

Nigel Durham is unavailable so Liam McKendry takes over wicketkeeping duties, while Jonny Moxon will be added to the bowling attack.

York’s Yorkshire Champions Trophy semi-final away to Drakes Hudddersfield League champions Hoylandswaine has been confirmed for Sunday, July 7, 1pm start.
