A magnificent seven-wicket haul by Daniel Woods gave York victory over Appleby Frodingham in an enthralling Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League contest at Clifton Park.

In a match reduced by rain to a timed contest, the home side beat both Appleby Frodingham, and the weather, with only two minutes to spare.

York chose to bat first against in-form visitors who had won their last four matches.

Openers Duncan Snell and Jack Leaning made a brisk start before play was interrupted by a heavy shower with the score on 28 from six overs. When play resumed, they picked up where they left off until Snell (49) edged Jack Forrester to ’keeper Tom Brookes with the score on 79.

Oliver Hairs went for two when an attempted leave took the edge, providing a second catch for Brookes off Paul Hilton.

Leaning went to his half-century with a straight six off Kieran Lindley during a partnership with Liam McKendry (24) which added 60 for the third wicket.

After McKendry top-edged an attempted sweep, he was replaced by brother Ryan, who made 33 before falling to Duncan Heath’s juggling catch on the square leg boundary with the score on 198.

Heath then bowled Alex Collins before a second break for rain saw the sides take an early tea with Leaning not out on 94.

He was left stranded on 99 when, upon the resumption, he could only add a boundary and a single before Woods was forced to declare on 223-5 to have any chance of forcing a result.

The home side were left with only two hours to take ten wickets and avoid a stalemate.

Snell struck with the new ball, visiting skipper Heath edging to ’keeper Nigel Durham.

Fellow opener Kieran Lindley was out lbw sweeping at Woods, beginning a devastating period of play which saw the spinner pick up four wickets in 15 balls to leave the visitors rocking on 64-6, Ryan McKendry picking up the other wicket to fall.

York went into the final hour needing four wickets. Three further victims for Woods brought together the final pair of Jack Forrester and Scott Grimes and their stubborn resistance looked as though it would deny the home side.

They defended resolutely for 54 balls before Tom Pringle bowled Grimes with the score on 120, with only eight balls remaining.

Yesterday, holders York were knocked out of the Kingfisher Beer Cup by Doncaster Town, who won a rain-affected game on a faster scoring rate.
