Tykes cling on to salvage draw

SKIPPER Darren Gough teamed up with Tim Bresnan to stave off the threat of defeat on the final day of Yorkshire's LV County Championship division one clash with Nottinghamshire at Headingley.

Defeat looked a real possibility in the final hour as Yorkshire found themselves batting to save the match with Bresnan and Gough marshalling the home side through with an unbeaten stand.

Their half an hour stand, which was worth 19 runs, prevented Nottinghamshire getting the chance to knock off a mere 44 runs for an unlikely victory.

Yorkshire quickly wrapped up Nottinghamshire's first innings for 422 earlier in the day.

When the home side batted, England captain Michael Vaughan looked assured at the crease once more, after opening partner Joe Sayers failed to make double figures for the second time in the match.

Vaughan was out just as he was finding some real momentum, playing on to Graeme Swann for 34.

After Anthony McGrath was caught behind seven short of a half-century, Jacques Rudolph completed a trio of batsmen who lost their wickets when seemingly well placed as he was dismissed for 32.

At 140-3, a draw still looked the most likely outcome.

However, the loss of five wickets for only 28 runs left the match on a knife-edge before Bresnan and Gough came to the rescue.

Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon described the drawn game as a "patchy performance" from his side's point of view.

"We did a lot of hard work, but didn't really capitalise when we should have done," he said.

"We seemed to keep letting Notts back into the game.

"We've got to give them credit for the way they bowled, but too many of our dismissals were of our own making.

"It wasn't easy batting in the first innings, but we've come out with a draw and at least we've avoided defeat."
