Morkel strikes on debut but Notts bounce back

Morne Morkel marked his debut by taking his first wicket for Yorkshire, but he then saw Nottinghamshire regroup to threaten a sizeable first innings lead at Headingley.

Aussie Adam Voges was the South African pace bowler's first wicket in English cricket on day three of the division one LV County Championship clash.

Said Morkel: "It was nice to get my first wicket. I'm pretty happy, but it's hard work out there with a slow wicket. I like a pitch with a bit more bounce."

Morkel later limped off the field, but he was confident the hamstring injury he suffered was not serious.

"I thought it was cramping at first. It went really tight. I'll do all I can to play on and I'm pretty sure I'll be fine."

After Mark Wagh made a half- century for Notts, Graeme Swann followed suit, but it was Chris Read who did the real damage with an unbeaten century.

And he was ably assisted by Stuart Broad, who also made 50.

At the start of play, Matthew Wood and Wagh batted well in a stand of 43 but, just as Yorkshire had done in their first innings, Notts lost key wickets in quick succession.

Wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy was on hand to complete dismissals by holding on to edges from first Wood and then Voges.

Matthew Hoggard followed up Morkel's success with a wicket of his own by dismissing Samit Patel for only nine with a great ball that ripped back into off-stump.

The home side were seemingly in full control at lunch, with the visitors reeling on 86-4, but the heroics lower down the order turned the game on its head.

At stumps, Notts were in a strong position on 356-6 with a first innings lead of 57 already established.

The Tykes will need to end a formidable century partnership between Broad and Read or they could be in for a long final day at Headingley.
