YORKSHIRE'S Steve Patterson has claimed two more afternoon wickets against Essex at Chelmsford, but the hosts have had the better of things since lunch on day one.

The champions have advanced from 84-5 to 184-8 in the 62nd over, with rain forcing an early tea with 2.4 overs left in the session.

Jack Brooks also struck to match Patterson’s three-wicket haul.

James Foster was caught at deep mid-wicket for 25 to end a 55-run stand with sixth-wicket partner Ryan ten Doeschate.

Ten Doeschate then fell for 30 as he edged behind before Neil Wagner (19) miscued Brooks to mid-on, leaving the score at 183-8 in the 59th over.

Simon Harmer has 26 not out and Jamie Porter is unbeaten on one.

Yorkshire have claimed two points and need four more no matter what anyone else does to secure their Specsavers County Championship Division One status for 2018.
