YORKSHIRE are in talks with Ryan Sidebottom over an off-field role beyond this season.

Sidebottom has been ruled out of today's Specsavers County Championship match against Warwickshire at Headingley with a quadriceps muscle injury – and he is a doubt to play the final match of his career against Essex at Chelmsford next week.

The left-handed bowler failed a fitness test at training yesterday, with Matthew Fisher in contention to replace him.

Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon said: "We're talking to Ryan about the future.

"We've got nothing concrete to tell you at the minute but we're certainly talking to him about what his plans are going forward.

"I think, hopefully, there's a chance he will be involved with us. It's too early to say what that role will be."

Today also sees the start of the England one-day series against the West Indies at Old Trafford, where Yorkshire fast bowler Liam Plunkett begins his bid to move to the top of the ODI leading wicket-takers list in 2017.

He needs nine wickets to overtake Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan, with Plunkett having taken 28 this year and Khan 36.

"It would be great to be the number one wicket-taker in the world this year – but I would rather win a game," said the White Rose paceman.

"I've never been in that situation before for England. It would be great to achieve that but also to win that series."

Plunkett is keen to continue his good form of late with England's white-ball teams, especially as he bids to play more T20 cricket around the world in the growing number of domestic leagues.

He has been signed up to play in the Bangladesh Premier League in November and December for Sylhet Sixers, while Headingley team-mates Adam Lyth and David Willey will play for Rangpur alongside Chris Gayle.

"I'm 32 and going forward I feel right now is the best time for me to go and do that kind of thing," said Plunkett.

"I'm fit and bowling at my best. When you play for England, you're in the shop window. People see how you're performing. I feel like if I didn't do it now, I might lose that opportunity.

"It's nice for me to play T20 – but England is my goal and Yorkshire is my team. I also want to play for them. When these opportunities come up, I'd like to take them, for sure."
