JASON Roy, Rory Burns and Kumar Sangakkara excelled for Surrey to ensure Yorkshire were not in the pink at the end of day one of their floodlit Specsavers County Championship match at Headingley.

Roy was in aggressive mood for 87 off 91 balls as Surrey posted a commanding 374-6 from 96 overs having elected to bat.

Opener Burns top-scored with a measured 90 off 186, while Sangakkara continued his golden summer with 82 not out off 124.

The Sri Lanka legend raced out of the blocks before tea and was more watchful afterwards either side of the second new ball.

Yorkshire were off colour with the ball in the first two sessions, but they did improve after tea under lights.

Tim Bresnan claimed his 500th first-class wicket when Burns was caught behind immediately before tea, leaving the score at 271-4.

Ben Coad finished with two wickets, and Yorkshire fans will hope the sign of him feeling his hamstring is not a long-term issue. Steve Patterson also claimed two.

A crowd of 2,595, including 494 after 4.40pm when reduced ticket prices were in operation, watched this day’s play.

Former Durham pair Mark Stoneman and Scott Borthwick hit 30 and 31 to give a glimpse of Surrey’s aggressive approach during the first two sessions of this historic day/night Championship fixture.

Roy was promoted up to four above Sangakkara for his first Championship appearance of the season following a difficult Champions Trophy with England, and he looked in supreme touch.

He crisply struck eleven boundaries, most through the leg-side, and launched the expensive Adil Rashid (0-67 from 12 overs) straight into the Football Stand for two sixes.

Roy and Burns shared 147 inside 33 overs for the third wicket either side of lunch.

Coad made the initial breakthrough when he had Stoneman caught behind in the eleventh over after the left-hander had hit him for two boundaries, leaving the score at 39-1.

Borthwick then chipped Patterson to mid-wicket in the 21st.

Roy departed in the 54th over when he was trapped lbw by a Jack Brooks nip-backer, leaving the score at 222-3, and Burns followed in the final over of the afternoon, the 64th to Bresnan.

Burns was undone by extra bounce and edged a second catch to Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps as the score fell to 271-4 - Bresnan’s 500th.

Yorkshire improved after tea, and Sangakkara and Ben Foakes sat in until the second new ball was taken with the score at 309-4 after 80 overs.

Foakes (23) fell in the third over with the new ball when he chipped Coad to cover as the score fell to 320-5.

Sangakkara reached 50 off 86 balls to back up his one-day hundred here earlier this month.

Yorkshire picked up a sixth wicket in the 91st over when Patterson had Sam Curran caught behind for 20, a third catch for Jonny Bairstow to leave the score at 358-6.

Yorkshire have rested Ryan Sidebottom for this clash, while 18-year-old batsman Harry Brook has been named as Gary Ballance’s replacement from the start of day three onwards following Lions duty.
