JONNY Bairstow will return home to York today as he gears up for the start of Yorkshire's one-day Royal London Cup campaign this weekend – and he could open the batting.
Bairstow and England team-mates Liam Plunkett and David Willey have been named in Yorkshire's second XI squad for a one-day Trophy clash with Derbyshire at Clifton Park, starting at 11am.
The former St Peter's School pupil is one of a host of senior first-team players who will get a run-out ahead of Saturday's RL50 opener against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.
Bairstow, alongside Plunkett, Willey, Adil Rashid and Joe Root, are all available for the first three North Group games and Yorkshire coach Andrew Gale is considering him as an opening batsman in 50-over cricket. Azeem Rafiq will captain against the Falcons today.
Yorkshire second XI squad: Rafiq (capt), Bairstow, Carver, Fisher, Hodd, Leaning, Lees, Lyth, Plunkett, Rhodes, Waite, Willey.
