PETER HANDSCOMB will make his Yorkshire debut in next Friday's Specsavers County Championship opener against Hampshire at Headingley.

The Australian Test batsman will arrive in Leeds on Tuesday evening having been involved in a four-Test series in India, which finished earlier this week.

Handscomb, 25, will miss the three-day University friendly against Leeds/Bradford MCC University having flown back to Melbourne to spend a few days with his family.

His arrival ahead of the club's official photo call on Wednesday was confirmed by Yorkshire's director of cricket Martyn Moxon during today's one-day friendly victory over Papua New Guinea in Dubai.

Karl Carver and Will Rhodes were the standout performers with five wickets and an unbeaten century respectively.

Yorkshire bowled PNG out for 100 inside 35 overs and then chased down a manufactured target of 240 with three wickets and a little over two overs to spare.

Left-arm spinner Carver, of Sheriff Hutton Bridge, was celebrating signing a contract extension with Yorkshire through until December 2018, and he took 5-17 from seven overs.

Stamford Bridge all-rounder Rhodes then anchored the Vikings' pursuit of 240, helping them recover from 47-4 by sharing 69 for the fifth wicket with Tim Bresnan, who hit 42 after taking two wickets with the new ball.

Carver said: "I've played a little bit second fiddle on this tour so far, so it was nice to get some overs in and to contribute to a winning team with a few wickets.

"With it being an early start in the Royal London Cup (end of April), you want to get that winning feeling as early as you can, which we have done.

"We set a revised score of 240 to challenge ourselves on a tricky pitch – there was a bit of tennis ball bounce – and the lads showed a bit of grit to knock it off.

"I'm happy with my game, everything feels really good. I've worked hard in the winter and not overthought it too much. I've just gone out to do what I see as my job."

Yorkshire have also announced contract extensions through to the end of 2018 for Josh Shaw, Matthew Waite and Jared Warner.

Former England under-19s batsman Jonny Tattersall has also been handed a short-term contract through until the end of June.

Tattersall had been released at the end of 2015, but he has earned a second chance with Yorkshire on the back of some impressive second XI and league cricket form last summer.
