IF I’m honest, I didn’t see the appointment of Andrew Gale as our new coach coming at all.

He obviously hasn’t coached at this level before, but given his leadership style, I’m confident he will have no issues making the step up.

There is no doubt that he will have to take some time to find out his own coaching style, and we will certainly give him that chance.

Galey’s appointment means we have a really good mix of coaches at the club now.

We have Martyn Moxon, Ian Dews and Richard Damms, who are all vastly experienced, while Galey and Rich Pyrah are in the early stages of their coaching careers.

Rich must have learnt so much in his first year as a coach, and I reckon it will be the same with Galey over the next 12 months.

There’s definitely enough experience on the staff to allow that learning process.

Personally, I think the relationship between Galey and the players has to change. It’s only natural.

I don’t think you can be exactly the same as a team-mate to how you are as effectively a player’s boss. In any workplace it would be the same.

There will be a transition period there, but I would suspect maybe 70 percent of the foundations he’s created with the players will remain the same.

He’s going to have to make some decisions that people aren’t going to like, but the lads will understand and respect that.

When Dizzy came in, he had come from a different environment and was fresh and open to changing things at the club.

That, I believe, will be one of Galey’s biggest challenges over time. He’s been with Yorkshire since he was a schools’ cricketer, and a challenge for him will be how to freshen it up.

But he’s current in terms of his involvement in the game; he had a great, great first-class career. I’m sure he will handle it fine and will have no issues.

The subject of the captaincy is not something I have thought about yet. I have been busy trying to sort my winter out and concentrating on the early stages of pre-season training.

If it comes to those discussions, I will obviously have to think about it closely.

It was a huge honour captaining the team last year and getting to two semi-finals, but either way, it’s about what’s best for the team and what will best serve my game as I look to contribute to Yorkshire and progress my career.

I’ve said before just how tough I expected England to find their ongoing Test series in India, and last week’s second Test was an example of that.

If anything, it highlights what a great achievement it was for England to win there in 2012.

Last week was a typical Indian pitch, and these are the surfaces they are going to play on for the rest of the series. It showed just how big the toss is in these conditions. Then you need people to get hundreds.

Adil Rashid must have been a bit disappointed with how he bowled in Bangladesh, but he’s turned it around brilliantly and now only needs one more wicket to match what Shane Warne managed in a series in India.

With leg-spinners, it seems people want the finished article straightaway, but you’ve got to let players develop and flourish. He’s 27/28 now, and he’s still young, particularly as a spinner.

You can see the confidence that he’s got now. He really believes he can get the good batsmen out.

Belief is almost bigger than ability, but he now seems to have both in abundance.

Although I can’t be 100 percent sure, it looks to me as if a big part of the turnaround with Rash has been down to brilliant management.

He was under a bit of pressure after Bangladesh, but they could have said ‘look, it doesn’t matter how many wickets you get, you’re playing all five games’.

That may have given him the confidence to relax and perform.

When you’ve got players looking over their shoulders all the time, that, for me, has a big effect.
