YORKSHIRE took three wickets for 11 runs in the latter stages of the second afternoon against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl to regain the initiative as they defend their 281 first-innings score.

Ryan Sidebottom struck twice, including Sean Ervine for 80, and Jack Brooks once as Hampshire slipped from 199-4 to 210-7 at tea.

Yorkshire took four wickets in all this afternoon, with James Vince also falling for 60.

Zimbabwe-born veteran Ervine fell 20 short of a third successive Specsavers County Championship century.

Tim Bresnan picked up the first wicket to fall in the afternoon when he had England batsman Vince caught at second slip.

Vince and left-handed Ervine shared 107 inside 23 overs for the fourth wicket to advance from 38-3.

It was Vince's first 50-plus score in first-class cricket for club or country since scoring a century against Yorkshire at Headingley in mid-April.

Ervine and South African overseas all-rounder Ryan McLaren then added 54 in 15 overs for the fifth wicket before Sidebottom had Ervine caught behind to make it 199-5 in the 52nd.

With 208 on the board, Brooks then removed Lewis McManus caught at mid-wicket in the 57th over, the penultimate of the session, before Sidebottom had McLaren caught behind in the last.
