YORKSHIRE'S Travis Head is aiming to prove he is far more than just a white ball specialist by performing in the County Championship for his new side.

Head is confident he can build on the form that saw him named as the Sheffield Shield Player of the Year back home in Australia during their most recent domestic competition.

The 22-year-old South Australia captain enjoyed an excellent Big Bash T20 campaign for the Adelaide Strikers either side of Christmas, earning him a big reputation in the short forms.

But he also enjoyed a good Shield campaign, leading his state side to the final and scoring 721 runs from eleven matches with three centuries.

Head began his Yorkshire career with four sixes in 40 off 25 balls against Notts in the T20 Blast defeat on Friday night.

And while it is unlikely we will see the same kind of aggression in four-day cricket, he is determined to be positive.

“I’m really keen to play in the four-day stuff and prove that I’m not just a white ball player,” said the left-hander.

“To get the opportunity to play all three forms for such a strong county, it’s going to be a great couple of months.

“I was a bit inconsistent in Shield cricket, but I finished it really nicely. It was a while ago now, but hopefully I can bring some of the form that I had.

“It’s still fresh in my mind how I played against the red ball, and I’ll continue to try and be positive.

“It’s about being really positive for me. That’s the whole game plan we’ve had at South Australia, being nice and positive and putting it back on the bowler.

“I want to improve my consistency as well. The last six months I’ve been able to perform more consistently, but I want to do it for even longer.”

Not only is Head determined to win games for Yorkshire - his first chance in the Championship comes against Warwickshire at Headingley early next month - he is also keen to learn about how the back-to-back champions have forged their winning culture off the field.

“I’ve noticed it’s a very strong group just being with them over the last week or so,” he said.

“I know they’ve been successful over the last couple of years, but being in that dressing room it’s easy to see why.

“They work hard and play hard, but they are very close as a group. I’m looking forward to getting involved in that culture and playing in a very successful side.

“We are starting to build that at South Australia, but we haven’t got to the level that these guys are at yet.

“They’ve shown how dominant they’ve been in four-day cricket over the last two years.

“If I can take a couple of things back to Adelaide, it will be fantastic because we have a young group there who are showing some good things, but we have yet to take that step to being a very, very good side. That comes with experience.”

Head is currently due to stay with Yorkshire until late August, although there is an option for him to remain at Headingley for the rest of the season depending on how the White Rose’s fortunes pans out.
