YORKSHIRE’S bowlers left their Roses rivals Lancashire reeling during a memorable second day performance at Headingley yesterday, putting the champions on course for a crucial win.

Steve Patterson claimed his 300th first-class wicket as part of a collapse that saw Lancashire, replying to 308, slump from 46-0 before lunch to 196 all out at tea.

The Red Rose, leading the division at the start of this fixture and 19 points clear of fourth-placed Yorkshire, lost their first seven wickets for 46.

They were in serious danger of failing to reach the follow-on target of 159 thanks to two wickets apiece for Patterson, Tim Bresnan and Jack Brooks.

Liam Livingstone’s punchy 60 not out went a long way to helping the visitors achieve that feat, but they remain under the cosh ahead of day three.

Yorkshire, given 31 overs after tea to build on a lead of 112, reached close on 77-3, with Adam Lyth top-scoring with 44 not out.

Patterson started and ended the day at the crease, latterly as night-watchman.

The seamer was the last wicket to fall in Yorkshire’s first innings as they advanced from 301-9 overnight, and he said: "It worked out to be a good day.

"We would have liked another 15 or 20 in the morning, but in some ways it's good to get out there bowling.

“We didn't have the best of starts. We had eight or 10 overs where we bowled a bit short and wide, but then we found our rhythm and applied pressure.

"The pitch is offering plenty. If we have a really strong first hour with minimal damage, you'd like to think we'd be 250 ahead and in a position to post an imposing total and really put them on the back foot.

“(Enforcing the follow-on) didn't come up in conversation when I was out there.

“I suppose we'd have looked at it if we'd have been in that position. But I also think that if you get into the fourth day, the pitch is certainly not going to get any better.

“If we can get that imposing total on the board, they will be tired because they've been out there a long time. It's mentally very tough to come back from that. That's our plan.”

On his 300 milestone, which came when he had Karl Brown caught behind as he attempted to leave the ball alone, Patterson added: "It's always nice to reach personal milestones, and I've got to think of another one now.

“I suppose it's got to be 350, although further down the line I’d like 400.”

Only opener Tom Smith (26) out of Lancashire’s top six made it to 20.

Patterson made the breakthrough before lunch to get the left-hander caught at cover before returning to get Brown in the early afternoon.

There were four lbws in the innings, including Brooks getting Alviro Petersen lbw in the first over of the afternoon to start the rot.

Livingstone and Kyle Jarvis, who made 33, shared 48 inside seven overs for the ninth wicket as the last three wickets added 104. Adil Rashid then mopped up the tail with three wickets in 5.4 overs.

Yorkshire lost Alex Lees, Jack Leaning and Gary Ballance in their second innings after tea, two of them to Wagner.
