SOMERSET are compiling a strong first innings total as Yorkshire toil for wickets on day one of the Specsavers County Championship match at Taunton.

The hosts sit at 235-2 (67 overs), as Marcus Trescothick (97 off 151) was the only victim in the second session.

Former Australian opener Chris Rogers (91) is closing in on a hundred for Somerset.

Yorkshire’s pick of the bowlers has been Steve Patterson, who has 1-39 off 15.

The rangy medium-fast bowler continued on a probing length and eventually drew the edge of the patient Rogers that session, only for Lees to drop the chance at first slip.

Earlier, skipper Andrew Gale brought on Adil Rashid for his first spell of the day in the 49th over, a move that was instantly rewarded when he caught and bowled Trescothick for 97 off a sharp head-high chance.

This morning Gale decided to bypass the toss and send Somerset in – an option introduced this year for visiting captains.
