JACK Brooks bagged two wickets but the Yorkshire attack fell foul of an in-form Steven Mullaney on a free-scoring first morning of the Specsavers County Championship Division One match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

At lunch, after an uncontested toss, the home side had reached 132-3 after 29.3 overs, with Mullaney dismissed for 78, caught by Alex Lees at slip off Steve Patterson, three balls before the break.

Michael Lumb was 14 not out when the players came in.

Yorkshire’s first successes of the session came when Brooks struck twice in four overs in mid-morning.

After a difficult period for the home side - Mullaney brought up the 50 in the 11th over with a pulled six off David Willey – Brooks induced Alex Hales, on 36, to drive uppishly to short cover, where Joe Root took a good, low catch.

Four overs later, Greg Smith drove loosely at Brooks but only inside-edged the ball on to his middle stump.

Smith made nought off 12 balls but Mullaney continued to bat fluently, and his departure after an 80-ball innings, which had included 12 fours and two sixes, at least restored parity in the match after an eventful two hours’ cricket.
