MARTYN Moxon believes the best is yet to come from Jonny Bairstow after the England star committed his future to Yorkshire for another three years.

Bairstow, who grew up in York, has penned a new contract with the county champions until December 2018 on the back of a memorable seven months.

The 26-year-old wicketkeeper batsman, currently in South Africa preparing for the four-match Test series against the Proteas, scored 1,108 runs in the County Championship at an incredible average of 92.33 as the White Rose defended their four-day crown in the summer.

Bairstow also became a two-time Ashes winner whilst also being named as Yorkshire’s Player of the Year, the Players’ Player of the Year and the Cricket Writers’ Club Championship Player of the Year.

“It is great news that Jonny has signed on,” said Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket.

“He has been a big part of our success in the last few years. As we all know, he is an extremely talented cricketer.

“He is maturing, and is an integral part of what we do. His best years are yet to come. I have great admiration for Jonny and his talents. I hope that he can fulfil his full potential in the coming seasons.

“The next phase for him will be to achieve consistency in his performances with England. He has a great chance in South Africa to fulfil his goals against one of the best seam attacks in the world.

“We’ll all be watching on hoping he and the other Yorkshire lads succeed.”

Bairstow posted five scores above 100 and five more fifties in only nine Championship appearances last summer, and he is confident that more silverware is on its way to Headingley.

“I’m delighted to be signing a new contract with Yorkshire,” he said.

“We had a tremendous season in Championship cricket, lifting the title for a second successive season. It is great to be part of a culture where winning and being successful is at the heart of what drives the team on.

“The players are determined more than ever to ensure that we continue to set the benchmark high.

“It is an exciting time to be part of Yorkshire and England cricket, and I look forward to continuing to contribute to the success of both teams.”

Meanwhile, Academy products Jared Warner and Matthew Waite have signed junior professional contracts up until December 2017.

Seam bowler Warner, 19, is currently in Sri Lanka with the England under 19s as they prepare for next month’s one-day World Cup in Bangladesh.

All-rounder Waite, 20 on Christmas Eve, captained Yorkshire’s Academy to the Yorkshire League Cup and Black Sheep Champions Trophy double in the summer and played two one-day and as many Twenty20 matches for the first team.
