DEBUTANT Matthew Fisher sparkled under the new Headingley floodlights with five wickets to fire Yorkshire to an opening round NatWest T20 Blast seven-wicket win over Derbyshire.

The 17-year-old Sheriff Hutton Bridge fast bowler broke off from A-Level study and exams to became only the county’s third man to take a five-for in this format alongside Rich Pyrah and Jack Brooks.

Fisher returned figures of 5-22 from 3.2 overs to help skittle the Falcons for only 128 after they had been well placed at 66-1 in the ninth over having been invited to bat.

He and Rich Pyrah equally shared four of five wickets to fall for 15 runs in 25 balls as the visitors slumped between the ninth and 13th overs of an innings which saw South African Test captain Hashim Amla top-score with 29.

Yorkshire lost Andrew Hodd to a first-ball duck two balls into their chase, but their win was never threatened.

Andrew Gale and York's Jonny Bairstow shared 69 inside nine overs for the third wicket, posting 41 off 36 balls and 40 not out off 35 respectively as Yorkshire won with 20 balls remaining.

Fisher made his one-day bow aged 15 in 2013 before debuting in the Championship against Warwickshire on this ground last month, although he is not being considered for four-day cricket at present due to exams.

Two of his wickets were caught and bowled, including his fifth, while Pyrah’s four-over spell was excellent on the way to 2-13 with the key wicket of Amla one of them - caught at cover by Gale.

Fisher struck with his second ball in the ninth over to get Chesney Hughes caught at point before trapping Shiv Thakor lbw in his second over.

He returned inside the last four overs of the innings to round off his excellent night.

He had Alex Hughes caught and bowled and Tom Poynton caught behind at either end of the 17th over before polishing things off by getting Ben Cotton caught and bowled.

Cotton bowled Hodd to give Derbyshire an early boost as Yorkshire chased before Alex Lees fell caught at third-man off Mark Footitt’s left-arm seamers with the score on 31 in the fifth over.

But those were the only real scares for the hosts as they cantered to their target thanks to Gale and Bairstow, who followed up his Championship hundred against Hampshire earlier this week.
